Do you fit the description below? If so, you may want to consider getting tested for exposure to asbestos. Some examples of these people include those that have had contact with asbestos through a "burst exposure" i.e. a very heavy concentration of asbestos for short periods of time, unusual respiratory issues, prolonged exposure to asbestos, or friends or relatives of people who have involved themselves with asbestos-related industries even if the the one exposed to asbestos has no noticeable symptoms.
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to get tested if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language puzzling to the layman. Don't fear asking your doctor about your circumstance. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, have him clarify so you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve.
