Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of individuals at increased chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases are associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to get tested if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language unclear to the average person. Be sure to ask your physician about your condition. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases that are caused by inhalation of asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Dealing with mesothelioma can be daunting. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
