Do you fit the description below? If so, you may want to consider getting tested for exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with increased threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Those with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or breathing problems
Four specific diseases are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is imperative to get tested if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that could be confusing to the typical patient. Don't be afraid to question your medical professional about your situation. If you don't understand your doctor, request that he put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. All those who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by exposure to asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
Living with lung cancer can be tough. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
