Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. Read each of the bullet points below for the cardinal characteristics of people who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or difficulty breathing
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to see a doctor if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language unclear to the typical patient. Don't be afraid to question your physician about your state. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, request that he clarify so you can better get the picture. All people who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen.
