There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with stronger danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Those with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or breathing problems
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language incomprehensible to the average person. As a patient, you should be sure to question your doctor about your health problem. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, have him clarify so you can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by exposure to asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation no matter when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to initiate the process.
