Certain types of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. These people include those that: have had contact with asbestos through a "burst exposure" i.e. a very heavy concentration of asbestos for small amounts of time, troubles with their respiratory system, long-term dealings with asbestos, or friends or relatives of people who have involved themselves with asbestos-related industries even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs.
Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that could be confusing to the average person. As a patient, you should be sure to question your physician about your health problem. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, request that he put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. All those who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Living with mesothelioma can be tough. Weitz & Luxenberg can help diminish some of the pressure by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
