Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of those with higher hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
  • People with breathing problems
  • Those with ongoing exposure to asbestos
  • Anyone who thinks they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
  • Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or breathing problems

Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is recommended to seek medical council if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language that is perplexing to the average person. Don't fear asking your doctor about your state. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all those who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.

Dealing with mesothelioma can be demanding. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
