Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of people at elevated risk of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Anyone with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or irregular breathing patterns
Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is imperative to seek a doctor's advice if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that could be confusing to the average person. You should not hesitate to ask your doctor about your condition. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, get him to break it down so can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg stands by the belief that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
