Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the subsequent items for the primary characteristics of individuals who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Anyone with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or difficulty breathing
Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is imperative to see a doctor if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language that may be unlcear to the typical patient. If you are confused, you can ask your medical professional about your health problem. If you don't fully understand your doctor, request that he explain it in a way that you can better get the picture. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all men and women who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases such as mesothelioma.
