Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. Read each of the following points for the chief characteristics of people who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or irregular breathing patterns
In general, there is a group of diseases that result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is necessary to seek a doctor's advice if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language incomprehensible to the average person. As a patient, you should be sure to question your physician about your state. If you don't understand your doctor, request that he break it down so can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all those who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as mesothelioma.
