Many people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. Some examples of these people include those that have had contact with asbestos through a "burst exposure" i.e. a very heavy exposure to asbestos for a short amount of time, unexplained breathing problems, prolonged exposure to asbestos, or friends or relatives of people who have been involved in asbestos-related environments even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure.

In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is recommended to get tested if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language unintelligible to the typical patient. Be sure to ask your physician about your situation. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, have him put it in plain words so you can better comprehend. All citizens who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for deadly diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.

Exposure to asbestos can seriously damage your health. Weitz & Luxenberg understands this and can provide assistance. For a free consultation, fill out the form below.
