There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with stronger hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
The following are the ailments which have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to seek a medical opinion if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language unclear to the layman. If you are confused, you can ask your doctor about your status. If you don't understand your doctor, have him break it down so can better know your condition.
