Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. The following is a list of individuals at stronger chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Individuals with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or difficulty breathing
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is necessary to seek medical council if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Doctors sometimes speak a language unclear to the typical patient. As a patient, you should be sure to question your medical professional about your situation. If you don't fully understand your doctor, request that he break it down so can better know your condition. All those who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for deadly diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos, we can help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below begins the process.
