Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. The following is a list of individuals at elevated hazard of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- People with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of those who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or breathing problems
Certain illnesses have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to seek a professional opinion if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that could be confusing to the average person. If you are confused, you can ask your physician about your situation. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, have him clarify so you can better understand. All men and women who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Being exposed to asbestos can negatively impact your health. Weitz & Luxenberg understands this and is here to help. For a free consultation, fill out the form below.
