Asbestos is a mineral. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and other metals. Its fibers are powerful, flexible and will not burn. Asbestos also insulates very well and won't break down easily. Asbestos has been used in older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. Sometimes, asbestos fibers are mixed with a substance that binds them together, constructing an asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Countless industrial products are composed of ACM, for instance sealants, cement pipe and insulation.
Lots of individuals were part of the armed forces and lived alongside asbestos for quite a while without knowing that this could one day lead to the life-threatening disease: lung cancer.
