There are a number of services that have been instated for veterans of the United States armed forces. Look here for a contemporary list of the facilities in Louisiana.
Lauded for pioneering asbestos cases, Weitz & Luxenberg won a landmark consolidated trial in 1991 concerning men who had worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard in the 1940s and 1950s.
We have had 36 clients in that case and was awarded $75 million. Another case yielded a $64.65 million award for four asbestos plaintiffs in 1996 (NY, docket # 10893/95), and, in 2002, the firm won a $53 million verdict in New York for a brake mechanic suffering from mesothelioma (docket No. 12658-00). The trial team has recovered hundreds of millions more for its clients, many of whom formed the foundation of the triumphant Allied war effort in WWII.
Asbestos is a mineral. It is composed of silicon, oxygen, hydrogen and other metals. Its fibers are durable, flexible and flame retardant. Asbestos also insulates very well and won't break down easily. Other asbestos uses include older plastics, paper products and floor tiles. In most cases, asbestos fibers are mixed with a material that keeps them together, leading to the creation of asbestos containing material, otherwise known as ACM. Many industrial products are composed of ACM, such as sealants, cement pipe and insulation.
Countless Americans were part of the armed services and had contact with asbestos for many years not realizing that this could one day result in the deadly disease: mesothelioma.
