Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. Read each of the bullet points below for the primary characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to get tested if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language that may be unlcear to the typical patient. If you are confused, you can ask your medical professional about your state. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, get him to break it down so can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all men and women who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the services they deserve.
