Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. The following is a list of those with elevated danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Anyone with protracted exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or respiratory issues
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to seek a medical opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, doctors speak a language unintelligible to the average person. Don't be afraid to question your physician about your health problem. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to break it down so can better know your condition. All citizens who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by exposure to asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Dealing with lung cancer can be demanding. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
