Read on to find out about who may be at risk for asbestos exposure. Read each of the subsequent items for the most significant characteristics of people who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- Anyone with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or difficulty breathing
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible symptoms of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a doctor's advice if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, doctors speak a language that is baffling to the typical patient. Don't fear asking your medical professional about your health problem. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all men and women who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as mesothelioma.
