Different categories of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. The following is a list of individuals at stronger danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Those with extended exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or difficulty breathing
The following are the ailments which result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to see a doctor if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language incomprehensible to the typical patient. As a patient, you should be sure to question your medical professional about your circumstance. If you don't understand your doctor, request that he explain it in a way that you can better understand. Weitz & Luxenberg stands by the belief that all those who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
If you or someone you love has developed mesothelioma after exposure to asbestos, let us help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below begins the process.
