Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the subsequent items for the most significant characteristics of individuals who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Those with breathing problems
- People with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or respiratory issues
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the tangible symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is vital to seek a professional opinion if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that is perplexing to the typical patient. Don't fear asking your physician about your condition. If you don't fully understand your doctor, get him to explain it in a way that you can better get the picture. Weitz & Luxenberg believes that all people who have participated in the United States Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as lung cancer.
