Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. Read each of the subsequent items for the main characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- People with breathing problems
- Those with extended exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related areas, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or troubles with their respiratory system
The following are the ailments which are associated with asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is crucial to seek a professional opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language incomprehensible to the average person. Don't fear asking your doctor about your circumstance. If you don't understand your doctor, get him to break it down so can better understand.
