Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. The following is a list of people at increased threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Those with extended exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or respiratory issues
Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to seek a medical opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Further tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that could be confusing to the typical patient. Don't be afraid to question your medical professional about your health problem. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to clarify so you can better understand. All men and women who have participated in the American Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by inhalation of asbestos, such as mesothelioma.
