Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. Read each of the bullet points below for the cardinal characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- Anyone with breathing problems
- Those with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or irregular breathing patterns
Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek a medical opinion if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Physicians may speak a language that may be unlcear to the layman. Don't be afraid to question your physician about your health problem. If you don't understand your doctor, get him to break it down so can better get the picture. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all people who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for deadly diseases such as mesothelioma.
