Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of individuals at elevated danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Individuals with breathing problems
- Those with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or troubles with their respiratory system
Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is necessary to get tested if you believe that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, medical professionals may speak a language that may be unlcear to the average person. Don't be afraid to question your doctor about your health problem. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to clarify so you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg is a proponent of the idea that all citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
