Could you have been exposed to asbestos? Read the following to see if you fall under a category at risk. Read each of the subsequent items for the cardinal characteristics of those who may be at risk for asbestos exposure:
- People with breathing problems
- Individuals with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system
The following are the ailments which have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Certain specific signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is recommended to seek a doctor's advice if you imagine that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language incomprehensible to the typical patient. Be sure to ask your medical professional about your state. If you don't understand your doctor, ask her to clarify so you can better know your condition. All men and women who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen.
