Read below to see if you may be at risk for exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of those with elevated danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Those with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related vocations, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or breathing problems
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is essential to seek a medical opinion if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language puzzling to the layman. Don't fear asking your physician about your condition. If you don't fully understand your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg stands by the belief that all men and women who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the services they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
