There are certain individuals who are more easily injured by exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of people at higher chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
  • Those with breathing problems
  • Individuals with ongoing exposure to asbestos
  • Anyone who thinks they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
  • Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or troubles with their respiratory system

Certain illnesses have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of asbestos exposure can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is necessary to get tested if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Added tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, doctors speak a language incomprehensible to the average person. If you are confused, you can ask your physician about your status. If you don't understand your doctor, have him break it down so can better understand. All those who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for deadly diseases that are caused by inhalation of asbestos, such as mesothelioma.

Living with lung cancer can be taxing. Weitz & Luxenberg can help relieve some of the burden by providing you with a free case evaluation. Your first step is to fill out the form below.
