Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of those with stronger danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Individuals with extended exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related industries, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no evident exposure signs or breathing problems
In general, there is a group of diseases that have been linked to asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these warning signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is a necessity to seek a medical opinion if you feel that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language unclear to the typical patient. As a patient, you should be sure to question your doctor about your situation. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better understand. All citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen.
