Learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure and decide if you should be tested. The following is a list of those with increased threat of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Anyone with ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Individuals who think they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no obvious signs of exposure or difficulty breathing
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: lung cancer, asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is important to seek medical council if you presume that you have been exposed to asbestos. Other ways of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. There are times when a doctor may speak a language that may be unlcear to the typical patient. Be sure to ask your doctor about your state. If you don't fully understand your doctor, get him to explain it in a way that you can better know your condition. All citizens who have participated in the United States Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as lung cancer.
If you or someone you love has developed lung cancer after being exposed to asbestos, let us help. It's never too late for a free case evaluation. The form below initiates the process.
