Different categories of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. The following is a list of individuals at stronger danger of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Anyone with protracted exposure to asbestos
- Anyone who thinks they have had ongoing exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of individuals who have worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or breathing problems
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). Some symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these signs of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is a necessity to see a doctor if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Extra tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, doctors speak a language that is perplexing to the layman. Be sure to ask your medical professional about your situation. If you don't fully understand your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all people who have participated in the U.S. Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation regardless of when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to initiate the process.
