Tests for asbestos exposure should be administered to people who fit the description below. The following is a list of people at higher chance of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- Those with breathing problems
- Those with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- Those who think they have had extended exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of anyone who has worked in asbestos-related fields, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or breathing problems
Certain illnesses result from asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The warning signs of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is imperative to see a doctor if you presume that you have been exposed to asbestos. One form of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Other tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. At times, doctors speak a language incomprehensible to the average person. Be sure to ask your medical professional about your status. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better know your condition. All citizens who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the services they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for potentially fatal diseases that are caused by inhalation of asbestos, such as lung cancer.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation no matter when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to start the process.
