Do you fit the description below? If so, you may want to consider getting tested for exposure to asbestos. The following is a list of individuals at higher risk of developing an asbestos-related disease:
  • People with breathing problems
  • People with protracted exposure to asbestos
  • Those who think they have had prolonged exposure to asbestos
  • Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related environments, even if the individual who worked with asbestos has no visible symptoms or troubles with their respiratory system

Four specific diseases have been linked to asbestos exposure: Asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung) and lung cancer. The main indicators of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, these symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after initial exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.

It is imperative to seek a doctor's advice if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. Initial testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Additional tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language incomprehensible to the layman. Don't be afraid to question your physician about your condition. If you don't totally grasp your doctor, ask her to put it in plain words so you can better get the picture. All people who have participated in the U.S. Armed Forces should receive the benefits they deserve. Weitz & Luxenberg is committed to making this happen. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases that are caused by contact with asbestos, such as mesothelioma.

Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation no matter when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to initiate the process.
