Different categories of people with asbestos exposure should be tested for asbestos-related diseases. The following is a list of those with elevated risk of developing an asbestos-related disease:
- People with breathing problems
- Anyone with prolonged exposure to asbestos
- People who think they have had protracted exposure to asbestos
- Immediate family members of people who have worked in asbestos-related trades, even if the person who worked with asbestos has no noticeable symptoms or breathing problems
Certain illnesses are associated with asbestos exposure: Mesothelioma (a cancer of the thin membranes lining the thoracic and abdominal cavities and surrounding internal organs), asbestosis (a serious, chronic, non cancerous fibrous hardening and scarring of the lungs), lung cancer, and pleural plaque and thickening (scarring of the lining of the lung). The most commonly known symptoms of asbestos-related diseases are coughing, coughing blood, shortness of breath, chest pain and weight loss. Unfortunately, the detectable symptoms of contact with asbestos can appear up to 25 years after primary exposure. Annual or even semi-annual asbestos detection tests are recommended.
It is a necessity to get tested if you think that you have been exposed to asbestos. The usual mode of testing is an x-ray (side and front view of your chest.) Supplementary tests may include a pulmonary function test, blood work, a CT scan and/or biopsy. Often, doctors speak a language that could be confusing to the average person. Don't fear asking your physician about your health problem. If you don't completely comprehend your doctor, ask her to explain it in a way that you can better comprehend. Weitz & Luxenberg supports the notion that all citizens who have participated in the American Armed orces should receive the benefits they deserve. This includes compensation for life-threatening diseases such as lung cancer.
Did you know there is no time limit for filing an asbestos lawsuit? Weitz & Luxenberg can help you receive compensation no matter when you were exposed. Simply fill out the form below to begin the process.
