WISCONSIN MESOTHELIOMA ATTORNEY
Free legal consultation for Wisconsin residents diagnosed with work-related asbestos disease
Once known almost exclusively as a brewing and manufacturing powerhouse, Milwaukee is the main cultural and economic center of the Milwaukee-Racine-Waukesha metropolitan area, with a population of some 1.7 million residents, as of 2007.
Milwaukee is the largest city in Wisconsin and the county seat of Milwaukee County. So far, so good. But residents may be interested to know that Milwaukee County has recently been identified as one of the Top 100 Counties in the United States recording mortalities caused by asbestosis and mesothelioma, reports a top Wisconsin mesothelioma attorney with our firm. Asbestosis and mesothelioma are caused almost exclusively by worksite asbestos exposure.
Health report on Wisconsin asbestos disease
November 2, 2010 – Compared with other states in the country, Wisconsin ranks No. 16 for worker deaths attributed to asbestosis and mesothelioma. California, Florida, New York and Pennsylvania are the top-ranked states recording asbestos-related mortality.
These statistics are based on an examination of U.S. death certificates recorded by the federal government between 1979 and 2001 and reviewed for a national study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit public information organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
According to the report, most mortalities related to asbestos disease in Wisconsin are centered in and around Milwaukee.
Asbestos epicenter: Wisconsin’s Milwaukee County
Milwaukee County is found on the EWG’s list of the “Top 100 U.S. Counties For Asbestos-Related Mortalities.”
The landmark study reports that asbestos exposure and disease killed up to 1,082 individuals in Wisconsin between 1979 and 2001. In Milwaukee County, up to 229 individuals died from either asbestosis or mesothelioma in the same period.
Notably, these figures “likely represent less than 20 percent of total asbestos mortality during that time,” says the report, because “mesothelioma was not tracked by the federal government as a cause of death until 1999.” When the government began tracking mesothelioma as a cause of death, U.S. mortality from asbestos disease more than doubled in 1999 with 2,343 deaths, up from 935 the previous year.
Most mesothelioma cases are diagnosed decades after worksite asbestos exposure. Asbestos is no longer mined in the United States, but it is still imported and used in construction and automotive products, like brakes and clutches. Large quantities of asbestos still remain in older public buildings, and will eventually have to be removed.
