Weitz & Luxenberg Provides information regarding asbestos exposure in the state of Wyoming

Are you suffering from an asbestos related disease such as mesothelioma, asbestos lung cancer or asbestosis? If you lived in or visited certain sites in Wyoming, you may have unknowingly been exposed to asbestos. As you may or may not be aware, most if not all of the military bases in the United States, (especially those that were constructed before the regulations implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and similar organizations) utilized asbestos in some capacity. The Navy was especially notorious for its use of asbestos and asbestos based products, but the Air Force, The Army and the Marines were just as culpable.

"I worked inside the boilers for six months. Sometimes there would be three or four guys hammering away at the asbestos walls... nothing but dust everywhere,” said J.S., a Navy veteran who died from mesothelioma. I remember coming out of the boiler and blowing my nose... it was full of black carbon and dust….I was diagnosed with mesothelioma less than two months after I retired from doing something I loved-- teaching. I didn't want to die. I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up. And I wanted to be with my wife. It's very sad to realize I won't be able to."

Since the dangers of asbestos were known for so many years, why did it continue to be used? Efficient production of ships, air crafts and other military vessels and products was of paramount concern. Asbestos, valued for its inflammability, flexibility and versatility was just the material the Army, the Navy, the Marines and the Air Force required.

The Air Force had a noble vision, but it came at a terrible cost

“The United States Air Force will be a trusted and reliable joint partner with our sister services known for integrity in all of our activities, including supporting the joint mission first and foremost. We will provide compelling air, space, and cyber capabilities for use by the combatant commanders. We will excel as stewards of all Air Force resources in service to the American people, while providing precise and reliable Global Vigilance, Reach and Power for the nation.” (F.E. Warren Air Force Base)

F.E. Warren Air Force Base Facts:

  • Following a proclamation issued by President Herbert Hoover in 1930, the Base was renamed Fort Francis E. Warren, in honor of Wyoming’s first state governor.
  • “The base was initially used as a training facility. In 1958, the 4320th Strategic Missile Wing was established with responsibility for 24 Atlas missile sites under Strategic Air Command. Although not the first designated missile wing, Warren became the first fully operational missile wing in the command. On Sept. 2, 1960, the 564th Strategic Missile Squadron was declared the first fully operational Intercontinental Ballistic Missile squadron.” (F.E. Warren Air Force Base)
  • The base trained soldiers who served in World War I and World War II. During the latter, the Fort “Trained up to 20,000 of the Quartermasters Corps.” (F.E. Warren Air Force Base)
