Zoloft May be Related to Septal Heart Defects- Consider your Legal options

Read more about the potential link between Zoloft and birth defects

Yes. There are studies that show that anti-depressant Zoloft is associated with a host of concerning birth defects, including septal heart defects,Omphaloceles, anal atresia and limb reduction defects. Septal heart defects are “malformations in the wall separating the right side of the heart from the left.” (Drugs.com) Though the chances of a child being born with a septal heart defect is quite low, there is still cause for concern.

For pregnant women who are clinically depressed, being taken off their medication, whether Zoloft or another antidepressant can cause “them to have a relapse into severe depression which can lead to self-destructive behavior.” (Drugs.com) Aside from the danger this poses to the women themselves, their unborn children are also at risk.

According to a group of Danish researchers who studied 500,000 born in Denmark between 1996 and 2003, septal heart defects were most common among women taking Zoloft and other antidepressants during the first trimester of their pregnancy. Some of the heart defects that resulted “resolved on their own, while others required surgery.”  (Drugs.com)

What complications can occur in children born with septal defects?

The severity of the complications depends on the nature of the septal defect itself. “Patients with a small defect may not require treatment, and those with a larger defect can have it surgically closed.” (Drugs.com)
