Court imposes hefty fines against criminal asbestos abatement company
AAR Contractor, Inc., was ordered to pay $22.8 million as restitution to victims of the asbestos scheme. AAR was also directed to forfeit $2 million to the United States. AAR was convicted following a five-month trial of a conspiracy to violate the federal racketeering statute (including numerous acts of obstruction of justice, money laundering, mail fraud, and bid rigging), a conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act and Toxic Substances Control Act and substantive Clean Air Act violations.
AAR Contractor, Inc. was an asbestos abatement company owned by Alex and Raul Salvagno. The Salvagnos were previously sentenced to 25 and 19.8 years, respectively, in prison and were also ordered to pay restitution and forfeiture in amounts similar to AAR. They are currently serving their sentences in prison.
