Food Contamination Worries Continue; Spark Call for FDA Reform
May 16, 2007--An article in the New York Times shines a spotlight on
the many recent errors committed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and
that agency's inability to keep the public safe from food
contamination.
The article interviews Elizabeth Armstrong, whose
2-year-old daughter became ill from eating contaminated spinach.
Her
daughter is still dealing with the health problems associated with that event,
including kidney failure. She will eventually need a transplant, the article
reports.
In response, Edwards testified before Congress last month,
advocating for major reforms in the way the FDA regulates food.
After the
E. coli outbreaks last year, sales of bagged spinach dropped 60 percent. They
are still down 20 percent, the Times said.
