Accutane and Risk of Birth Defects
Please note: While Weitz & Luxenberg has provided information about a number of medical and psychiatric side effects associated with the use of Accutane, we do not currently accept cases related to birth defects.
We are only able to assist Accutane patients who develop these gastrointestinal diseases: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease.
You have probably heard that Accutane causes a number of side effects, but were you aware that Accutane may cause birth defects if taken during pregnancy. More than 2,000 women became pregnant between 1982 and 2004 while taking Accutane. The majority of these pregnancies ended in abortion. One-hundred sixty babies were born with serious birth defects.
Generically known as Isotretinoin, Accutane is a teratogen. U.S. medical protocols require that women taking Accutane must also take two separate, effective types of birth control. Simililary, men taking the acne medication must be strictly warned not to share the Accutane supplies with female patients because of this risk.
