Roche Pulls Accutane Products from the Market
On June 26, 2009, Swiss-based pharmaceutical giant Roche Holding AG announced it was voluntarily removing Accutane from the American market. Roche notified the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of its decision, citing a reevaluation of its product lines with regard to competition from companies selling generic versions of the acne drug.
In addition, Roche also pulled the drug off the market in 11 other countries, including Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Portugal and Spain.
An important part of the company’s decision to pull the drug from the U.S. market was related to the hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of Accutane users who developed serious gastro-intestinal and colorectal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn's Disease or ulcerative colitis.
To date, Roche has been assessed over $33 million in damage awards, and is expected to face lawsuits from almost 5,000 additional Accutane patients who developed serious side effects after taking the drug to treat resistant acne.
