In 1982, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) first approved the use of Accutane (known generically as Isotretinoin) to treat patients with severe nodular acne that does not respond to other oral or topical medications. Since the drug was approved, thousands of patients suffering from cystic acne successfully completed courses of treatment with the drug.
In the 25+ years since the drug has been on the market, the FDA, medical researchers and investigators have since discovered a number of serious Accutane related side effects. Tragically, many former Accutane patients are only now learning that their pain and suffering due to Crohn's Disease, inflammatory bowel disease or ulcerative colitis is linked to their acne treatment decades earlier.
