Accutane and Thrombocytopenia
Please note: While Weitz & Luxenberg has provided information about a number of medical and psychiatric side effects associated with the use of Accutane, we do not currently accept Thrombocytopenia cases.
We are only able to assist Accutane patients who develop these gastrointestinal diseases: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease.
Thrombocytopenia (or -paenia, or thrombopenia in short) is the presence of relatively low blood platelets.
A normal platelet count is somewhere in the range between 150,000 and 450,000 per mm3. This range, however, is determined by the 2.5th lower and upper percentile. Thus, a deviation does not necessary indicate that disease exists.
Often, low platelet levels do not lead to clinical problems; rather, they are picked up on a routine full blood count. Occasionally, there may be bruising, nosebleeds and/or bleeding gums.
It is very important to get a full medical history chronology from the patient, to ensure the low platelet count is not due to a secondary process. It is also essential to ensure that the other blood cell types red blood cells, and white blood cells, are not also suppressed.
Laboratory tests that are conducted may include: full blood count, liver enzymes, renal function, vitamin B12 levels, folic acid levels, erythrocyte sedimentation rate.
If the cause for the low platelet count is still unclear, a bone marrow biopsy is often done to isolate whether the low platelet count is due to decreased production or peripheral destruction.
