Accutane Use May Lead To Ulcerative Colitis
If you have been prescribed the acne medication Accutane, be aware that you are
at risk for developing ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory
bowel disease (IBD) that can be difficult to diagnose since it has symptoms that are similar in nature other intestinal disorders.
The most common
symptoms of ulcerative colitis are:
- abdominal pain
- Rectal bleeding
- Anemia
- Loose stools and bloody diarrhea
- Fatigue
- Skin lesions
- Joint pain
- Loss or appetite and/or weight loss
- Growth failure in children and teens
About half of those diagnosed with ulcerative colitis experience mild
symptoms. Others suffer frequent fevers, nausea, bloody diarrhea, and severe
abdominal cramps.
Approximately five percent of those diagnosed with
ulcerative colitis develop colon cancer. Depending on the severity of the
disease, the risk for developing cancer increases.
