On August 4, 2009, health officials began pulling water samples from Acreage, Florida, where residents believe there is a possible cancer cluster.

The Florida Department of Health is looking into the possible Acreage cancer cluster, which was brought to their attention by area residents, some of whom have expressed interest in a potential environmental lawsuit.

Those families believe big corporations polluted their neighborhood and they have decided to seek justice.

According to the Department's website, the investigation is in its first phase.

A number of residents have provided information on their medical history and the epidemiologists are now focusing on brain and central nervous system cancers.

The Florida Cancer Data System which has accumulated cancer diagnosis and other information since 1981, is being reviewed in conjunction with the personal data supplied to reference any and all cancers found in the Acreage zip codes.

Once this information is accumulated it will be cross referenced and reviewed by the Center for Disease Control and other experts.

TIME FRAME:
Study details from phase 1 of the investigation will be available in mid to late August 2009. These results will help direct the investigation into the next phases.
