Analysts from the Department of Environmental Protection have begun taking water samples from wells in 50 Acreage homes in a ten square mile area. The DEP analysts will test for a wide-range of industrial and environmental toxins, according to WPTV.
A seeming spike in child tumors first raised the possibility of a cancer cluster in The Acreage, the television report said.
The sampling is aimed at determining whether contaminants - particularly industrial and agricultural chemicals - are in the water above regulatory levels in The Acreage region because of fears over a cancer cluster.
The DEP is testing water ahead of a state Department of Health determination, expected late this month, on whether a brain cancer cluster is in The Acreage. Residents suspect environmental contamination.
The state has agreed to get to the schools right away, but it will be six to eight weeks before the results are in.
