On January 8, 2010, the Palm Beach Post reported that health officials will soon conduct environmental tests to determine whether radon could be the cause of a possible cancer cluster in The Acreage, Florida.
According to the Post, the health department will be screening for the radon--a radioactive gas--in the homes of 12 families whose children were diagnosed with brain tumors or brain cancer in recent years.
Investigators are expected to complete the radon tests within the next few weeks, after health officials wrap up a month of exhaustive interviews with families of the dozen Acreage children who were diagnosed with brain tumors or brain cancer from 1993 to 2008.
In May 2009, residents of the Acreage contacted famed environmental advocate Erin Brockovich, who is now affiliated with our firm, about the possible cancer cluster in their community. When Brockovich alerted the firm's environmental lawyers, they mobilized to investigate the problem.
“I don’t have all the answers but I am driven to ask the important questions,” said Brockovich, who has spoken to many frightened families over the years about their right to seek the truth. “I am here to advocate for full disclosure—to get the information out there for the communities that are impacted by corporate dumping and other acts of negligence.”
