Actonel (Risedronate) is used by men and women to treat or prevent Osteoporosis. Actonel is also used to treat Paget's disease of the bone. Its function is to slow bone loss while building bone mass. Those using Actonel are warned of certain side effects while taking the drug.

On March 10, 2010, the Food and Drug Administration issued a health alert regarding the injury of “atypical subtrochanteric femur fractures” related to bisphosphonates such as Actonel. Femur fractures are fractures in the bone just below the hip joint.
