Weitz & Luxenberg Provides Information on Actos and the potential to develop bladder cancer which can result in death.
Are there bladder-cancer related deaths associated with Actos?
The FDA released a warning that there is a risk of developing bladder cancer in patients who take high dosages of Actos over a period of approximately 24 months or more. Bladder cancer ranks at the “4thmost common cancer among males and the 10th most common cancer among females.” (Johns Hopkins) It is estimated that over “50,000 people develop bladder cancer for various reasons, and more than 12,000 ultimately will die of the disease.” (Johns Hopkins)
“The French Public Health Insurance Office highlighted a potential risk of bladder cancer due to taking Actos.” (Reuters) This disconcerting discovery led to an Actos ban in France as well as in Germany, but the drug continues to remain on the American market.
The manufacturer of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals has agreed to include the risk of bladder cancer on all Actos labels.
Actos is prescribed to treat patients suffering from type 2 Diabetes, which afflicts “over 18 million people in the United States.” (USA Today)
I’m worried. Should I stop taking Actos?
Medical professionals across the country are “urging Actos patients to continue to take the drug,” (USA Today) unless their personal physician instructs them to stop. Stuart Seides of Washington Hospital Center warned that “quitting Actos abruptly may be dangerous, and could cause a sudden increase in blood sugar.” (USA Today)
