Weitz & Luxenberg Provides Information on how Actos can cause heart attacks
How is Actos related to heart attacks?
ACTOS states on its website that in clinical studies, “Actos did not increase the risk of having a heart attack or stroke.” (Actos) It also states that the Food and Drug Administration “reviewed data from a study of more than 5,000 high risk patients with a history of cardiovascular disease,” (Actos) and found that “there was no difference in the number of macrovascular conditions between patients taking Actos and those not taking Actos.” (Actos)
However, other studies found that “Actos causes as many heart problems as Avandia,” (Bloomberg) and that patients taking either drug “were 4% more likely to experience heart attacks, heart failure or die” (Bloomberg).
In addition to heart problems, there might also be a link between Actos and bladder cancer, according to a study conducted by the Public Health Insurance Office in France. More research on this link is pending, but in the meantime, the manufacturer of Actos, Takeda Pharmaceuticals agreed to list bladder cancer as one of the possible risks on all Actos labels.
